Cost effective lignin‑based carbon fibres for innovative light‑weight applications

Swerea SICOMP is a Swedish non-profit research institute with 52 employees focusing on polymer composites. SICOMP was formed in 1989 and their clients and partners range from small European composite processors to very large multi-national corporations. The Swerea SICOMP annual turnover is around 4.5 MEuro. The personnel is highly educated (28 PhD, 3 TechLic and 13 MSc) and devoted to polymer composite research. Research, education, consultancy services and technology transfer to industry are the main activities. Process technology, structural analysis, process simulation and material science are Swerea SICOMP’s core competences.

Roles in GreenLight

  • Development of suitable surface treatment and sizing of the lignin based CF that will ensure the adhesion between fibres and matrix and make it possible to handle the CF fibre yarns in subsequent operations.
  •  Manufacture of thermoset composite samples at different scales and from different fibre formats. Characterisation of processability of fabrics in composite manufacture as well as testing of mechanical performance of produced composites.
  • Support to product-specific processing development in collaboration with end-user.
